Gina Prince-Bythewood has a lot of love for Children of Blood and Bone. The filmmaker, 57, praised Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling 2018 novel while discussing the upcoming movie adaptation during a New York Comic Con panel on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Javits Center in New York City. Her comments come just months after the author claimed she left the movie set "hyperventilating and sobbing." Prince-Bythewood told moderator and filmmaker Rian Johnson that she was drawn to the project by her "love of the book." "Everything that was in those pages that Tomi wrote is everything that makes a great film," she said. "You get the gods and creatures, and magic and battles, and kingdoms and heroes. It was such an extraordinary story of characters. I just got excited about trying to bring that to light." Adeyemi's hit novel takes place in the fantasy world of Or??sha and follows Z??lie Adebola as she fights against the king to restore magic to the kingdom after her mother was killed. "Danger lurks in Or??sha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Z??lie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy," the book synopsis teases. The upcoming movie adaptation was written and directed by Prince-Bythewood, and stars Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch and Viola Davis. Adeyemi was originally set to executive produce and co-write the movie. However, she announced in July that she was "officially separating" from the movie due to conflict.
