It Drew Strength from Their Fear

Despite my upbringing and years of experience, the same questions always run through my mind prior to a negative house cleansing. How did I get here? Am I on the right path? Am I strong enough today to face yet another non-human soul?
After driving for a while, I arrived at my client’s home. The structure was built in 1925 and the design was certainly charming and inviting to an unsuspecting guest. At first glance, I admired the intricate iron-work fence that defines the front lawn. The walkway and small wooden porch, with its delicate peeling paint, was surrounded by overgrown foliage, which was obviously neatly planted at one time, but now desperately needed some tender loving spring-time care. However, my reasons for being there did not include judgment of the scenery, so I took a deep breath and stepped up to the entranceway ready to face my obligation.
A fresh-faced, pleasant woman greeted me at the front door. Immediately, upon entering her home, tension enveloped us. Empathically, I soon realized that she was trying to hide a certain level of sadness, but wanting to protect her family, as a mother, gave her strength to face her intruder. I knew right then and there that her motherly instincts and my abilities were going to be a strong force against the toxic energy that disturbed her residence. I was called upon to ensure her life returned to normal and she and I together would be hard to fight.
During our phone conversations, she openly confided that she had been attacked in her sleep. She knew I would believe her. She presented her explanation of events very naturally, as if we were sharing thoughts on a work of fiction. Although her children have no knowledge of her encounters, they felt threatened for various other reasons. Her eight-year-old daughter was fearful of the upstairs portion of the home, claiming something had waited for her in the stairway. Each time she navigated the steps, the young girl asked someone to escort her. Her teenage son had complained about a tall, black shadow near his bed that always appeared to be angry. He explained that the emotions he sensed from the shadow were more like feelings he received rather than anything that was seen or heard. He chose to stay with friends most weekends and admittedly dreaded the return home.
While the mother was certainly worried about her children’s safety, the violent physical contact was directed toward her. The most ominous events happened on two occasions when she was pulled by her ankles out of the sanctity of her bed. I documented her initial recollection during our first phone call. The descriptions of the attacks were identical and described by the homeowner as follows: “I felt a strong force surround both of my ankles and feet at the same time. It did not feel like his hands gripping me because the pressure was even all the way around. The sensation was both hot and constricting at the same time. The next conscious moment was when I realized I was on the floor. I had no idea how much time had passed and I have no idea if he did anything to me in between falling and waking. I have several lasting bruises on my legs and forearms that I cannot explain and my ankles have been sore and a little swollen.”
The homeowner elaborated on her feelings and said her initial reaction was to flee in the middle of the night, but she had nowhere to go and was not in a position to buy another home. She also shared her fear of the monster possibly following her to another location which would have made all of her actions be in vain. After confiding in a friend who is an acquaintance of mine, she decided to call in an expert instead of abruptly relocating.
As we began, the homeowner, a single mother of two, timidly explained how she had not sensed him in three nights. She said, “As strange as it seems, Josette, I sort of think he has been behaving because he knew a medium was coming.” I assured her that it is certainly not unusual for the energy to calm before a medium visits.
When I ascended the steps to the dimly lit second floor, I felt an all too familiar heaviness. It was a heavy consciousness that I have come to expect in this line of work. Almost immediately I could tell where it was hiding from me. Even before I entered the room I could smell the dank, moldy deadness. It wanted me to be afraid and it scanned me for an open door to my deepest anxieties. I remained unemotional and I showed no fear. I asked it why it was bothering this nice family and told it that it was time to leave. The presence remained silent in the corner of the room as if it was studying me. As I questioned its intentions once more, I sensed that it was a very old tortured soul with a deep dark history. I decided at that point that further attempts at communication were only going to draw me in and distract me. While I would have loved to speak with the being for my own learning and growth, that was not my purpose. The family only invited me in to rid their home of this bad-intentioned stronghold and it was time to do so. It then put up a barrier and began resisting
I realized early on that it staged its attacks when the family was most vulnerable, usually when they were alone and sometimes when sleeping. It drew strength from the family’s fear, but all things have weaknesses. I understood that I needed to remain strong and focused to expel it. As I neared the focal point of the energy, I also perceived that it was not as strong as it wanted me to think.
Before going any further, I recognized if this purification was going to be successful, I had to understand the reason the attachment happened in the first place. The house was older, yes, but the family had lived there since the children were very young. There were no renovations that could have sparked an energy shift either. Even before my visit, the homeowner assured me that she had not brought any new companions into the home environment. In addition, she promised me that no one had been experimenting with an Ouija board, nor had anyone attempted to gather Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), both of which can open doorways and draw energies with a lesser intent. After fully inspecting the grounds to no avail, my attention was then drawn to the surrounding properties, more specifically the house next door. Through my direct questioning, I was told that the neighbors were a nice couple, but their adult son had recently moved back home. The son, it was explained, is a man with a questionable past. I have many spirit guides who have proved their reliability throughout my work and it was at this point that I asked for their perspective on this man and guidance for the situation.
My main protector is a religious figure named Meena who has been with me since birth, she is my guided force for spiritual cleansings. Meena showed me that the neighbor’s son had what some would call “skeletons in his closet,” some of which included multiple forays into the occult. Meena shared that the son was lost in this life and struggled to find acceptance in a negative dimension. I was then almost certain that he drew this presence to the area and it settled in with an unsuspecting family, a family who desperately needed me to be successful. My concern was not if I could clear the home, I felt confident that I would. Yet, my fear was instead that the negativity from next door could allow other sinister entities with similar intentions to continue plaguing this family. This scenario would not be too worrisome if I lived nearby, but with a four hour car ride separating us, I worried more about the distance. Returning at a moment’s notice would not be so easy.
After I had finished gathering information about my foe, I felt the time was right to begin forcing it out. I began the environmental clearing in silence. I work quietly in order to keep my energy directed at the target. In this way, it seems that I work differently than others portrayed in television and movies. This is because I believe strong emotions and theatrics usually exacerbate the predicament, and also my reserved actions double as a shield for the residents of the property. After completing the opening ritual, the homeowner and I joined hands. We intentionally spread white light throughout the structure while drawing from our own unique spiritual beliefs. When I felt the atmosphere transform, I blessed the home with love and light and we retreated.
With a heartfelt goodbye and lingering hugs, I left with peace of mind and a stronger conviction. Yes, this small-town girl is on the right path. I am capable and awaiting the next confrontation.
