Mindful Diet for The Holidays

Mindful Diet for The Holidays

As temperatures start to drop, it's only natural to retreat to the comfort of home and the warmth of comfort food as you wait for the holidays marked by an abundance of festive libations and indulgent foods.

It's enough to test anyone, after all, there are just so many times a person can say no to a delicious treat. But how do you stick to your mindful diet at the most festive and diet-busting time of the year?

Make A Plan

Have you heard the adage that you shouldn't go to a party hungry? While that may or may not be true, what is true is that you shouldn't go to a party without a plan for eating. Plan in advance where you want to indulge and how you can rein it in without feeling deprived. Do you love appetizers and cocktails? Choose a smaller dessert! If you can't deny your sweet tooth, try making wise choices during dinner or with your beverage choices and go all out during dessert.

Set Your Own Pace

It can be difficult to be mindful about your eating while you are celebrating the season with family and friends. It's all too easy to follow the pace set by your dining companions. Fight the urge to follow the leader and become the leader yourself. Slow yourself down by putting your eating utensils down between bites and alternating with sips of water. While there is so much going on, be sure to focus on what's happening in the moment and don't forget to follow your personal hunger cues.

Indulge Wisely

Don't be too hard on yourself and give yourself permission to enjoy the season and your favorite treats. Just take the time to ensure that when you indulge, you do so wisely. There is no reason that you have to pass on your favorite seasonal treat. Just serve yourself a smaller portion and give yourself time to enjoy every last bite. Don't waste your time on indulgences that don't bring you joy.

Get Moving

It's hard to stay active as the winter weather sets in, but sticking to a regular exercise routine can help you keep your spirits up while combating the extra calories. If you find yourself overindulging, try adding in additional movement whenever you can. Don't get discouraged if the only parking is at the back of the lot and try taking the stairs. And remember, the time spent on your feet as you cook or clean for company counts as exercise!

While it may seem counterintuitive, mindful eating during the holidays can help you hone in on the joy of the season. Instead of feeling guilty or upset, you will know that you enjoyed each and every morsel while celebrating with the people you know and love.
