The Tradition of The Hierophant

The Tradition of The Hierophant

In the spiritual reading of the Tarot cards, the Hierophant is the masculine counterpart to the High Priestess. His appearance speaks to tradition and obedience. Where the High Priestess connects with intuition and spirituality, the Hierophant connects with social institutions and group conformity.

Whether referred to as the Pope, the Shaman or Chiron, the Hierophant tarot card is the fifth card of the Major Arcana. In both traditional and alternative decks, the card features the Hierophant sitting on his throne of knowledge and acting as the bridge between the Divine world and the Earthly realm. Even in female-centered decks, the Hierophant is a male figure.

The Imagery

The card features a male religious figure sitting on a throne with two male figures at his feet. He wears a three-tiered crown on his head, holds his right hand up in a gesture of blessing that unites heaven and Earth while his other hand holds a scepter topped with three lines symbolizing the Hierophant's power over the spiritual and Earthly realms. Two keys are at his feet, which symbolize the keys needed to unlock both conscious and subconscious wisdom.

Unlike other cards, the imagery of the Hierophant is deceptively straightforward and features restraint and few key colors. The Hierophant is at the center of the card and wears a bright red cloak in traditional decks. He sits against a backdrop of white with gold and yellow accents. These three colors make up the majority of the palate and commonly represent, power, spirituality and riches.
